Counselling & Domestic Violence Support Worker
Jennifer is not this participant’s real name. Her name has been changed to protect her identity and ensure her safety.
Jennifer is a 47-year-old woman who left her relationship due to her partner’s coercive control and emotional abuse. His escalating behaviour meant Jennifer was no longer safe, and she had to flee her home with only a suitcase and her beloved dog.
Jennifer’s visa status meant she was able to work, but she could not access government financial or housing support. She needed time to recover and rebuild her life after experiencing years of abuse.
At the Rev Bill Crews Foundation, Jennifer found a safe, supportive, and welcoming place. BCF provided her with food, clothing, toiletries, and temporary shelter while she worked out her next steps. With no income or family support, Jennifer wasn’t sure where she could go—or whether it would even be possible to find housing for herself and her dog, as many places still don’t allow pets.
Through advocacy, persistence, and creative problem-solving, BCF supported Jennifer to find a refuge that accepted both her and her dog, despite her visa status.
Today, Jennifer is on her way to living the life she’s always dreamed of—she is studying, taking care of her wellbeing, and has just secured a job. The support she received gave her back her confidence, independence, and the chance to live free from control and violence.
“Your support gave me the opportunity to make my own path and open the doors for the new me to shine and grow. I’ll never forget what you have done for me. Thank you again for opening this door for me—I’m so very grateful and happy again.” – Jennifer
