Recipient Story
Brooke is aresilient 30-year-old woman living with her parents and brother on afamily-owned property in a rural town in Queensland’s North Burnett Region. Afourth-generation cattle producer, Brooke has spent her entire life in ruralsettings and maintains a deep connection to this way of life—one that reflectsher values and long-term aspirations.
In 2019, Brookesustained an incomplete C3 spinal cord injury as a result of a medicalprocedure to treat a spinal tumour. Despite the significant challenges thatfollowed, she remains actively engaged in managing her own cattle property—anendeavour she describes as both her greatest passion and her strongest sourceof motivation. Her cattle operation not only represents her own future, butalso contributes to the future of her three young nephews, with whom she sharesa close and meaningful relationship.
Currently,Brooke’s mobility is limited to the area around her home, which significantlyrestricts her independence and ability to manage the property. She applied theAt Home Care Grant program to assist with the purchase of a Defenderside-by-side utility vehicle—a safe, enclosed two-seater designed for use inrural and agricultural settings. This vehicle would provide Brooke with themeans to access her property safely and independently, enhancing her quality oflife and enabling her to continue the work she loves. Relocating Brooke to anurban environment is not considered appropriate, as her rural lifestyle is notonly her preference but also a vital aspect of her mental health and overallwellbeing.
Brooke’sapplication to the At Home Care Grant program was successful, and supportprovided towards the purchase of the utility vehicle—empowering her to remainindependent and continue her important role on the family property.
